This small family business in the archipelago of the Orkney Islands began in the early part of 1993. The work has developed from functional pieces through to more decorative and sculptural work. Although this business is a partnership Michael, who is self taught, does all the turning and carving himself while Caroline does most of the bookwork and marketing. However, either of them will be pleased to discuss designs, commissions and types of wood available. |

Late in 2000 the British Crafts Catalogue commissioned a piece for their spring edition. At the moment they have exclusivity on that design however, there are new ideas and styles being developed all the time. One of the most interesting from our point of view is the "artefact range" where the exterior of the vessel or bowl is distressed and natural features enhanced before the final finish is applied. Also we are developing a range of amphora made from various wood types and given a range of finishes. The timbers used are mostly Scottish hardwoods such as ash, oak & elm. A lot of the pieces are wet turned and as they dry any cracks or fissures are made good with 'repairs' and left as a feature. The 'repairs' are created with hallmarked silver wire, copper banding, cold cast bronze or brass and even twine lacing. Natural deformities are utilised to their greatest advantage to help give each piece a unique appearance. Some pieces are also enhanced by hand carving. |
